Under about 15 tapes? A mail-in service is probably cheaper, and we'd rather tell you that than sell you the wrong thing. Over 25 tapes, it isn't close — and you still own the box afterward.
What the per-tape price doesn't cover.
The money is only half of it. Mailing means handing over the only copy that exists.
- Your originals leave your house. Boxes do get lost, and there is exactly one tape of that wedding.
- One to two weeks of waiting — longer around the holidays.
- You don't see the footage until it comes back. A tape that didn't play well still gets billed.
- Add-ons stack up: thumb drive, DVDs, cloud storage, rush handling, return shipping.
- Strangers watch your family footage before you do.
And the $20 converters? Those need a computer.
The cheap ones are a dongle, not a converter. They need a PC, a driver, a piece of capture software, and enough free hard drive space. That's where most people quit — usually after the return window has closed.

The stuff people ask first
How is this different from a mail-in service?
They're a service; this is a device you own. They charge per tape and you mail your originals to them. You buy this once, keep it, and digitize as many tapes as you want without mailing anything. Both are legitimate ways to do it — the deciding factor is usually how many tapes you have and whether you're comfortable shipping the originals.
I only have eight tapes. Should I buy this?
Probably not, if price is the only thing you care about — a per-tape service will likely cost you less. Buy the box if you'd rather not mail irreplaceable footage, if you expect to digitize more later, or if family members have tapes too.
Do I need a VCR?
Yes — you need something that plays the tape. The Digitizer records what the player sends out; it doesn't have a tape deck inside it. Same for camcorder tapes: you'll use the camcorder itself, or a deck that fits that format.
How long does one tape take?
Real time. A two-hour tape takes two hours. You don't have to sit there — set the auto-stop timer and walk away.
Where do the files end up?
On the USB drive or SD card you plug in, as standard MP4 files. They open on an iPhone, Android, Mac, or PC with nothing extra installed. Drives up to 256GB, formatted FAT32 or exFAT.
Will it look better than the tape?
It'll look like the tape — that's the honest answer. What you gain is a copy that stops aging today, and an HDMI output so you can watch it on a modern TV instead of squinting at a CRT.
