Three steps, start to finish

If you can work a VCR, you can work this

There is no install, no account, and nothing to figure out on a computer. The whole job happens on your TV.

01

Plug it in

Red, white and yellow cables run from your VCR, camcorder or DVD player into the front. One HDMI cable runs to the TV. The power adapter goes in the wall — no batteries to die halfway through a tape.

02

Press record

Your tape plays on the TV exactly the way it always did, full size. Hit record when you're ready and let it run. You can watch the whole thing while it saves.

03

Pull the drive

Recordings land on the 32GB USB drive as MP4 files — the same format your phone shoots. Drop them on a laptop, text them to your sister, or back them up wherever you keep photos.

Every port, labeled

Two sides. Old in, new out.

Nothing is hidden behind a menu. The jacks are printed right on the case, so you plug in once and you're done.

The input side of the unit, with three RCA jacks labeled VIDEO IN and L-AUDIO IN-R
Left side — RCA input

RCA in

The three RCA plugs — yellow for picture, red and white for sound. The same jacks that have been on the back of every VCR and camcorder since the eighties.

The output side of the unit, with ports labeled DC, USB and HDMI OUT
Right side — HDMI, USB, power

HDMI out

HDMI sends the picture to your TV. The USB drive holds the finished files. DC is the wall adapter, so nothing runs on a battery.

Questions we get every week

Before you order

Do I need a computer?

No. That's the whole point of it. The recorder connects to your TV and saves to the USB drive on its own. A computer is only useful later, if you want to copy the files somewhere else.

Will it work with my camcorder?

If your camcorder, VCR or DVD player has the three round red, white and yellow jacks on the back, yes. That covers most VHS decks, VHS-C and Hi8 camcorders, and older DVD players. If your gear only has S-Video, the Digitizer 3.0 is the one you want.

Do my tapes get sent anywhere?

Never. You do the whole thing at home, on your own TV. The tapes stay in your hands and the files stay on your drive.

How much fits on the 32GB drive?

Roughly eight to ten hours of standard VHS footage. When it fills up, copy the files off and keep going, or add a second drive.

What's the difference from the Digitizer 3.0?

The 3.0 has its own built-in screen, so you can work at the kitchen table instead of in front of the TV, and it takes S-Video as well as RCA. The Starter Kit does the same recording job for $78 less, using the TV you already own.

Those tapes aren't getting any younger

Magnetic tape fades a little more every year it sits in a closet. One weekend with this is all it takes.
