What you've been told, and what's true.

"Just mail them in, it's easier."
Easier for whom. You lose custody of irreplaceable originals for weeks and pay per tape. Past a dozen or so tapes the cost typically passes the device — mail-in rates vary widely, so check current pricing with any provider you're considering. The risk never goes away.
"You need a capture card and a computer."
That's the old way. This records straight to a USB drive with no PC, no drivers, and no software that stops being supported in three years.
"Store it in the cloud, it's safer."
It's safer from fire and worse for control. A drive in your desk cannot change its pricing, close your account, or be sold to another company. Do both if you want — but own the copy that matters.
"The quality won't be any good."

Do I need a working VCR or camcorder?
Yes. The digitizer captures a signal — it does not transport tape. If your deck needs work, the included guide covers head cleaning and what to look for in a used replacement. Most people already have one, or find a good deck for $40–80.
What file format do I get?
Standard MP4. Plays on anything, edits in anything, no proprietary wrapper and no conversion step. The files are on your drive the moment you pull it out.
How large are the files?
Roughly 1–2GB per hour of footage depending on settings. A 256GB drive comfortably holds well over a hundred hours of VHS-sourced video.
Can I capture audio-only sources?
Yes. Cassette decks connect through the same RCA inputs. Turntables need a phono preamp first — a turntable's output is too quiet and the wrong EQ curve to feed in directly. The mic input also lets you narrate over any capture.
Is there any subscription, account, or activation?
None. It is a piece of hardware. It works on the day you buy it and it works the same way in ten years with no internet connection at all.
What does the warranty actually cover?
Two years on the hardware, with US-based support. If the unit fails within that window, it gets replaced.
