Do I need a working VCR?
Yes. The digitizer captures whatever a player sends it — it doesn't play tapes itself. If your VCR died, a used one runs $40–80 on eBay or Facebook Marketplace, and the free guide covers what to look for and how to clean the heads.
How long does one tape take?
Real time. A two-hour tape takes two hours, because it has to physically play through. Most people run one during dinner and one during a show.
What quality do I get?
The quality that's on the tape. VHS was never HD — this captures it faithfully rather than pretending otherwise. The HDMI output can upscale it for viewing on a modern TV.
Do my tapes get damaged?
No. The tape plays through your VCR exactly once, the same as watching it. Nothing is written to the tape and nothing leaves your house.
